Courses

Environmental Systems Science courses combine classroom learning with fieldwork, lab experiments, and real data. You won't just hear about environmental science—you'll do it.

Core Areas

Hydrology and Climate

How water moves through landscapes and atmospheres, and why it matters for California's future.

Environmental Chemistry

The chemical processes that shape air, water, and soil quality.

Ecology

How species interact with each other and their environments

Microbiology

The invisible organisms that drive nutrient cycles and shape ecosystems.

Soil Science

The living layer beneath our feet that supports all terrestrial life.

Sustainable Agriculture

The practices and systems that feed a growing world without compromising the land that sustains it.

What Makes Our Courses Different

Field components Many courses include trips to the vernal pools, Sierra Nevada field stations, or local agricultural sites.

Real data You'll work with actual research data, not just textbook examples.

Small class sizes You'll know your professors and they'll know you.

Research integration Faculty bring their current research into the classroom, so you learn what's happening now, not just what made it into the textbook.

Flexibility Choose an emphasis in Earth and Climate Science or Ecosystem Science depending on your interests.

Three Emphases

Earth and Climate Science Focus on the physical processes that shape our planet—atmospheric science, hydrology, geology, and climate systems.

Ecosystem Science Focus on living systems—ecology, microbiology, soil science, and the interactions between organisms and their environments.

Education Focus on teaching, curriculum design, environmental literacy, and experiential learning to translate environmental science into meaningful learning experiences.

All paths share a common foundation and lead to the same degree.

Beyond the Classroom

Every ESS student participates in research, an internship, or service learning before graduating. Many students join faculty research labs as early as their second year. Others work with partners like the National Park Service, US Forest Service, or local conservation organizations.
